Corina Daugherty Calhoun (she/they)
Licensed Clinical Social Worker
Hi, I’m so glad you’re here. I'm Corina, Therapist and owner of Inner Spark Therapy.
MY APPROACH
I believe in your innate knowing and capacity for growth. You are the expert in your experiences, and I seek to partner with you to explore & remove barriers that may be dimming your inner spark. It is truly an honor to be invited into the inner lives and experiences of others, and it is amazing what can be accomplished through relationship. A therapist and client develop a real human connection and research shows this is the most important predictor of positive outcomes. Healing often involves laughter, I trust we will build ease & levity together. My approach is flexible, and I'm dedicated to shifting it based on your evolving priorities and goals. Growth takes time, I'm here to help you find ways to cope while you heal and uncover the light within.
I wholeheartedly welcome and celebrate LGBTQIA+ & BIPOC folks, & am deeply committed to social justice, equity, and anti-racism. Any sliding scale fees or discounted services are prioritized for those of marginalized communities. As my practice grows, I look forward to offering more accessible services and flexible pricing. Collaboration is the upmost importance to me, ensuring that you are an active participant in your own healing process. I invite and value feedback about what will make therapy most meaningful for you throughout our work together.
WHO I WORK WITH
My experience is diverse (read more about this below), which is how I enjoy keeping my caseload of folks I serve. My primary specialities are mood disorders like depression, anxiety & Bipolar disorder, trauma and navigating life stressors and changes. I have also worked with and welcome individuals with psychosis, substance abuse challenges, relationship struggles, personality disorders, working through grief, needing caregiving/parenting support, and exploring their identity. Basically, if you’re curious if we’d work well together, please reach out and we can discuss during a free phone consult.
THERAPY MODALITIES I USE
Let’s get a bit more concrete. Knowing that the therapeutic relationship is paramount to the success of the process, there are several tools we can utilize depending on your needs and preferences. I primarily operate using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, which is grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I also apply Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, trauma-informed paradigms, mindfulness, body-centered approaches, and Motivational Interviewing. It is important to me that I stay current in research and use modalities that have evidence behind their effectiveness, and am always open to sharing more details about these approaches so we can identify what may work best for you.
CORINA AS A HUMAN
Ok, but really- who am I? I identify as a White, cisgender female. Mother, partner, dedicated friend, caregiver, lover of all animals (yes even bugs!), nonviolent, crafty, sunset chaser, curious, homebody, and fervent avoider of hard pants. I grew up on the Southern Oregon Coast, and have recently relocated to Coos Bay from Portland. I have found joy in reconnecting to my childhood self in her natural environment. There is nothing I love more than spending time at the beach, taking in all the sensory experiences it has to offer and basking in the wonder of nature. My dog Jeff feels the same, he is a lovable menace.
As many healers do, I came into this work having worked really hard on healing myself. My experiences and struggles have helped me become a more empathetic and attentive therapist, with direct insight into the darkness that is stigmatized and not often spoken in our broader culture. I have always been highly attuned to the injustices in the world, and I have a passion for advocating and supporting social justice efforts while continuing to educate myself. The majority of my career has been spent in community mental health settings, which primarily serve systemically minoritized individuals. This work is very dear to me and I hope to someday return when I am able to be in a position with a larger impact on the mental health system as a whole, which is currently failing so many.
PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
Knowing I would likely want to become a therapist, I specifically chose to become a social worker because I appreciated the holistic and macro perspective this background gives me in service of the individuals I work with. I have experience working in many different environments, with diverse individuals from various walks of life. Some of the settings and populations I have worked with include supporting transition-aged youth in their independence goals as they experience significant mental health challenges, mediation for couples working toward divorce and child custody agreements, director of an outpatient clinic for those experiencing mental health and substance abuse challenges, management and therapy services at a residential supported housing facility, and working with those experiencing a first episode of psychosis or extreme states. I have never been a traditional outpatient therapist, meeting with folks in an office. Most of my work has been conducted in people’s homes, going for walks or getting coffee. I am continuing the non-traditional approach of telehealth, as I find it helps me reach more people and allows me to wear sweatpants and slippers to work.
